Crayfish in the Bay of Islands

A lot of people flock to the Bay of Islands for vacation. Adventure and relaxation in one - fishing, snorkelling and diving are all popular thanks to the bay's marine life.

The Red Lobster, or Crayfish, hides in rocky crevices and reefs throughout the Bay. They're an iconic part of our underwater ecosystem — grazers and scavengers that help keep the reefs healthy.

Look, don't take

Brilliant news for the Bay: a full ban (rāhui) is now in place on taking crayfish across the Bay of Islands while stocks recover. It's a long-overdue win for the reefs, and we're right behind it.

On The Rock, that means we celebrate crayfish where they belong — in the water. If you're lucky enough to spot one while snorkelling, take a good long look, then leave them to it. Future cruisers (and the Bay itself) will thank you.
